ARTICLE - JUSTICE STRIKE - 90%

THE STRIKE ON MONDAY, FOLLOWED BY OVER 90%

Following the impossibility of obtaining the confirmation of a date for the installation of the members already certified, to the Superior Council of Judicial Power (CSPJ); after the meeting of Friday [date of an earlier ultimatum] with Mr. Michel Brunache, Minister of Justice, the Bar Federation of Haiti (FBH), and the National Association of Haitian Magistrates (ANAMAH), had announced last Friday, in protest, a work stoppage of 24 hours for Monday, April 16, 2012.

Following this one day strike, supported by over 90% according to Mr. Carlos Hercules, new President of the Order of Lawyers of Port-au-Prince, he declared: "It was a success, [...] There was a complete work stoppage, because the actors have became aware of the importance of the CSPJ in the practice of justice in Haiti, and that is why they responded positively to this appeal; I would say at over 90% [...]

Since the weekend we are in constant talks with a particular member of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic and this morning, we had a meeting where it made ​​us understand that the President is very aware of the situation and determined to put the CSPJ in place, but since he is suffering, he can not give us a date to meet with us, it will be done soon. Therefore, we expect the signal of the President, because what we really hope at this meeting, is that the President gives us a date for the presidential decree appointing the members of the CSPJ, certified and designated, and a date for taking office; namely the inauguration ceremony. Therefore, all negotiations must turn around these two fundamental elements [...]

I give the benefit of the doubt to everyone, even to the President of Republic. When a member of his office says that he will receive us this week [...] we hope he recovers quickly, that he gives us a day, that we meet with him, and that the discussions are successful [...]"
