HAITI PRESIDENT MARTELLY RELEASED FROM MIAMI HOSPITAL
(Miami Herald) - By Jacqueline Charles
Michel Martelly has been released from Miami hospital after treatment for a clot in his lung, but there’s no word on when he will return to Haiti.
Haitian President Michel Martelly has been released from a Miami hospital, Haiti’s National Palace said in a statement.
Martelly flew to Miami on a commercial flight Monday afternoon to be treated for a clot in his lung, an advisor said. He was released late Wednesday, according to a press statement issued Thursday morning.
It did not say when he will return to Haiti, which has been without a functioning government for nearly two months after the Feb. 24 resignation of Prime Minister Garry Conille.
“The Head of State wishes to thank the members of government, civil society, parliamentarians, religious organizations and the Haitian people at large for their unconditional support and renews his determination to make greater efforts to resume his work on behalf of the well-being of the population as spoon as possible,” the palace said.
On Wednesday, Martelly told the nation he was doing much better. The president also condemned an incident on the grounds of parliament earlier this week when several busloads of armed individuals wearing military uniforms forced their way onto the premises demanding to speak to lawmakers. He was joined by Conille, and the head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, Mariano Fernández. Fernández called the invasion “an unacceptable act of intimidation” that was “an attack on the integrity of sovereign democratic institutions” of the country.
The incident occurred while Haitian lawmakers in the lower chamber of deputies were meeting to set up a committee on the ratification of Prime Minister Designate Laurent Lamothe.
Lamothe was approved by the Senate last week.
