REACTION OF THE CHIEF OF MINUSTAH ON TUESDAY'S INCIDENT
(Haiti Libre) -

Mariano Fernández Amunátegui, the Chief of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), deplores the intimidation of elected officials of the Nation, perpetrated Tuesday, April 17, in the perimeter of Parliament, by a group of men in military fatigues, some armed, claiming to be demobilized soldiers of the former army.

"This unacceptable act of intimidation, in order to force an immediate meeting with parliamentarians, has disrupted the work of the lower house, and caused the suspension of the session.

This new provocation of armed men in military uniforms, whose activities have been clearly declared illegal by the Haitian authorities, is a violation of the integrity of the sovereign democratic institutions of the country.

The Minustah salutes the wisdom with which parliamentarians have handled this incident, which allowed a peaceful resolution of the matter, without an intervention of security forces being necessary."

Mariano Fernández stated that as soon as they were informed of the incident, peacekeepers from the Brazilian contingent BRABAT2 went to the scene, and that positions of static patrols have been installed around the perimeter of Parliament, to strengthen the security of the area and deter further attempts of intimidation.

Mariano Fernández stated that "these acts are unnecessary provocations, harmful to the country, including to its image in the world.
