ARTICLE - REHAB. OF SANATORIUM

REHABILITATION OF SANATORIUM OF CARREFOUR-FEUILLES
(Haiti Libre) -

Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of Haiti, accompanied by Dr. Gabriel Timothée, Director General of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) participated in the integration of services within the equipped premises of the Sanatorium, on the heights of Morne Lélio, in Carrefour-Feuilles.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of project partner institutions, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Organization for Migration (IOM), MSPP, World Vision, Food for the poor, Healing Hands, and the Freelung (French Association of pulmonologists bringing together pulmonologists of Savoie), and medical personnel. It was an opportunity for the staff director of the institution to renew its commitment to serve the tuberculosis community, while complying with the founding principles of the sanatorium: treatment with the cure of air, light and sun and isolation from infectious patients.

Created in the 1940s, by Dr. Louis E. Roy, the sanatorium, severely damaged on January 12, 2010 and robbed of its medical equipment, has been renovated and can now offer specialized services in the treatment of various forms of the disease. This medical facility is composed of a medical clinic, pediatric, surgical, laboratories, dental care, bronchial endoscopy, radiology, and laundry, not including operating rooms, refectory, etc...

About 130,000 tuberculosis cases, across the country, require intensive health care. The Sanatorium must now face a much greater demand for care, with an increased number of patients since January 12, 2010. Supported by the Office of the First Lady, in terms of medical equipment, the hospital can, gradually, and through this work of rehabilitation, rebuild a better reputation for the health environment in Haiti.
