"SUN CITY KID"

HAITI'S EVENS PIERRE FIGHTS FOR CITE SOLEIL
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE - You may recognize him from the documentary Ghosts of Cite Soleil, he was the Underboss of Haitian 2Pac, but today, the 28 year old, Evens "The Sun City Kid" Pierre ranks 23rd in the World Boxing Council Lightweight standings and is rising.

Retired Boxer now Promoter Daniel "Haitian Sensation" Edouard points DH back to the documentary where Evens Pierre could be seen in won frame walking around playing a guitar and in the other running carrying an AK-47 through the Port-au-Prince neighborhood of Cite Soleil.

Pierre credits his turnaround to Brazilian peacekeepers of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Evens Pierre always fought in the streets but after the earthquake of 2010 peacekeepers from Brazil noticed his potential and got him out of gutter fights and into the sweet science that is boxing.

Losing his home in Haiti, the Brazilian peacekeepers payed his way to Panama, where Evens Pierre almost immediately became the World Boxing Association Featherweight Champion in 2010 at the age of 26, weighing in at 61 kg (under 134lbs).

"The Sun City Kid" boasts a 21 win, 1 loss record with 16 wins by way of knockout in the lightweight class and his new ranking of 23, makes him just a few fights away from a title bout; the title is currently held by Antonio DeMarco of Mexico.

Pierre has dropped the guns, but has not left his hometown of Port-au-Prince where he trains. He believes that he can serve as an example for the young kids growing up.

"My wins here serve to show people that trading punches is better than exchanging fire," Pierre said.

Evens Pierre likes to say that what drives him in the ring is his desire to bring a world title belt back home to his fans in Cite Soleil where life stops every time he fights and where he has become a symbol of hope and pride. “If God wills and I win the world title,” says Pierre, “I will dedicate it (the title belt) to my mother and the people of Cite Soleil.”
