BROTHER OF SLAIN LAWYER DENOUNCED PRESIDENT MARTELLY AT FUNERAL
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE - The brother of a murdered member of the National Palace legal counsel denounced President Michel Martelly at his brother's funeral this past weekend.

Lagrandeur Briel, a lawyer who was shot dead on November 11 when a group of men circled his vehicle and opened fire, upon his return from a working trip in Guadeloupe, was laid to rest on Saturday. At the funeral, the brother of Briel denounced President Michel Martelly for being indifferent.

Briel's brother, Sener Alvert Daphinis, said that since the murder, the family had not received a visit or even a call of sympathy for his family, although his brother had worked closely with President Martelly as legal council for the presidency.

The brother, also while speaking at the funeral, reproached the presidency for the rise of insecurity and its lack of accountability in maintaining the functions of the forensic institute and pursuing justice.

The President of the Port-au-Prince Bar, Carlos Hercule, and a delegation of lawyers attended the funeral. Hercules expressed outrage at the irresponsibility of the State, in that the police has not appointed a medical examiner since the death of the last medical examiner in March.

The Dean of the Civil Court, Jocelyne Casimir, District Judge Bernard Saint-Vil, former Government Commissioner, Sonel Jean-Francois, and lawyers Rigaud Duplan and Samuel Madstin - Madstin who was in the vehicle with Briel and escaped unscathed - attended the funeral as well.
