PORT-AU-PRINCE - The National Police of Haiti (PNH) conducted on Saturday the seizure of several devices used to hack telephone networks.
The police confiscated materials estimated at $60,000 to $70,000 [US] during the operation that followed an investigation by the Anti-Telecommunication Fraud unit of a property on Rue Clervaux in Petionville, reported Haiti Press Network.
"After several complaints from the officials at CONATEL and telephone companies, relief finally came" said Gerard Laborde, the Director of Legal Regulations and Communications for Voila, a mobile telecommunications company.
2 SIM cards capable of relaying 108 phone calls each were found. The pair of cards are capable of allowing 216 international telephone calls to connect simultaneously telecommunications officials said. Also, they recovered five outdoor antennas, a generator, several inverters, three laptops, two desktops, a GPS and 8 monitoring cameras.
Police found at the scene about 180 recharge cards of 100 gourdes for Voila and Natcom and 27 SIM cards for Voila.
"The companies estimated a deficit of $12 million per year", said Jean Pierre Larrio, Legal Consultant for CONATEL. "Taxes of these calls could allow 120,000 children to attend school in the National Fund for Education Program(FNE)," he added.
"Police will continue their investigations to finally get hold of the owners of these networks. Under the Constitution, the bandits will spend three years in prison," said Jean Pierre Larrio.
