HAITI ELECTED TO THE COMMITTEE "MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE" OF UNESCO
(Haiti Libre) -
Laurent Lamothe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs has learned with great satisfaction, the announcement of the election of Haiti [Friday, November 4], to the Committee of the Coordination Program "Man and the Biosphere", of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This vote, granted unanimously [195 votes], is a great victory for the Haitian Chancellery, who was able to mobilize around this candidacy all the chancelleries of the world and proves that Haiti can definitely rely on its partners to achieve its sustainable development goals.
The Chancellery has worked closely within the framework of the outcome of this file, with the Ministry of the Environment; who will represent the Government of Haiti in this instance. Indeed, the Ministry of Environment, has included on the instructions of President Martelly, the region of "Morne La Selle" into the program "World Biosphere Reserve" of UNESCO. The region of "Pic Macaya" will enjoy the same status in the coming weeks.
In 2012, Haiti will have two large areas included in the program related to biodiversity, climate change and environmental protection.
The integration of Haiti in this instance to UNESCO reflects the determination of the Martelly Administration, to make the environment one of the priorities in its policy.
