PRESIDENT MARTELLY TO RELEASE 100 PRISONERS, SAYS JUSTICE MINISTER

PORT-AU-PRINCE - The Minister of Justice, Pierre Michel Brunache, announced on Thursday that the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, by lottery, would release 100 convicts from prisons throughout Haiti.

10 prisoners from each of the 10 departments of Haiti is what the Head of State has planned.

Justice Minister Brunache said speaking on Radio Vision 2000 that to be eligible for this pardon from the president, a prisoner must have completed 75% of their prison term and not have been involved in a violent crime or kidnapping.

4,000 prisoners are estimated to have escaped from Haiti's National Penitentiary during the January 12, 2010 earthquake. The Haitian National Police are still working to round up these escapees...
