PORT-AU-PRINCE - Police officer Lesly Jean Pierre, 35, was shot and killed in Cite Soleil, Wednesday night to Thursday, announced the Haitian Police spokesman, Gary Desrosiers. Five suspects were caught an hour after the crime.

The policeman was driving in civilian clothes when he was attacked at the place called “Death Corner” located in Cite Soleil, a vast slum in the northern of Port-au-Prince. Lesly Jean Pierre was assigned to the Police Station of Cross-des-Bouquets.

An hour after this crime and not far from where it happened, the police caught five people who were aboard a van. One of them named, Robenson Dieujuste, seemingly shot, was concealed by the others inside the vehicle. Police said the arrested individuals claimed to be carrying a pregnant woman.

This latest incident brings to 28 the number of policemen killed since January 2011 in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

Haitian Police announced Wednesday significant steps to deal with the upsurge of insecurity in the capital, especially during the holiday season.
