INAUGURATION OF THE SECURITY RUNWAY AT THE PORT-AU-PRINCE AIRPORT
(Haiti Libre) -

Today will take place the inauguration of the renovated runway of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. On this occasion the Haitian airport authorities, the Special Representative of Secretary-General of the UN in Haiti, Mr. Mariano Fernández Amunátegui and the Deputy Commander of the Minustah, General Felicio Los Santos will be present.

In accordance with Resolution 1927 of the Security Council (June 2010), the six of military engineering companies of the Minustah (1,260 peacekeepers as of December, 20 2011), are providing support to the Government of Haiti in the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged on January 12, 2010.

In this context, and at the request of the Haitian airport authorities, the Paraguayan contingent of military engineers undertook the complete renovation of the security runway of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

As part of this work, which took place between October 25 and December 2, 2011, the engineers have redone the layout of the runway, and compacted the surface of 7,600 meters, cleaned and dug 9,000 meters of drainage ditches and installed a new culvert with four exhaust nozzles of concrete.

Along the perimeter of the airport on both sides of the tarmac, this security runway allows access to emergency rescue vehicles and facilitates the drainage and the maintenance of the tarmac.

In accordance with international standards, the complete renovation of the runway was a prerequisite for the airport keeping its status as an international airport.
