HAITI SENATE WORKING ON DRAFT RESOLUTION FOR UN PEACEKEEPER WITHDRAWAL
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Senator Kély C. Bastien, also the former President of the Parliament said on Wednesday that he is working on a draft resolution for the withdrawal of United Nations troops in Haiti; adding that the peacekeepers have done enough harm to the nation.

The peacekeepers of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are accused of numerous acts of violence including some resulting in death, involvement in the introduction of a cholera epidemic that has killed more than 6,000, prostitution, and sexual assault among other charges.

The third senator from the North Deparment is very indignant at the rape of the young man in Port-Salut and believes that this is the last straw. The senator has also emphasized that this is not an isolated case or the first crime of its kind committed by MINUSTAH soldiers. Bastien also recalled the case of a young man found hanging at a MINUSTAH base in August 2010 in Cap-Haitien.

All these acts show that the UN military mission is a sword of Damocles over the head of the Haitians, Bastien said. Kély Bastien urges the Head of State to think and to mention the gradual departure of MINUSTAH as his next action at the UN.

The former president of the Senate noted that the UN forces are not essential for national security and expressed the belief that we must consider the establishment of a new security force.

Senator Youri Latortue had, during the protest march at the beginning of the week in Port-Salut, announced that the Justice and Safety Committee is working on a resolution to the gradual departure of MINUSTAH, whose agents are no longer in the order of sanctity among the population.
