D.R. REAFFIRMS ITS SOLIDARITY

Earlier this week, on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly, in New York, President Martelly met his counterpart from the Dominican Republic; President Leonel Fernández. During this meeting the President of the neighboring Republic has confirmed that the university that they are currently building in the north of Haiti will be launched on January 12, 2012.

In addition to this university the Dominican government is committed to providing 15,000 books and two buses for the latter. Morales Troncoso, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who related the discussion between the two men; said that these books come from an American university, and that it is President Fernández who managed to get them.

Mr. Troncoso, indicated that also discussed was the construction of a binational port which would be financed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), with an investment of $250 million. This port would be located near the university and the first phase will enable the creation of 20,000 jobs.

The Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs declared that the DR authorities can help in other areas; such as the organization of electoral processes, telecommunications, civil servicse and electronic government (e-governance). "We came to reaffirm our solidarity, our support and willingness to cooperate with the Haitian people..."
