photos - downtown - part 5

The statue of the "Neg Maron" had a pillow on the conch. This is a good symbol for the haitian people who are looking for shelter and a place to lay their head.

The "Neg Marons" were the freedom fighters in the battle for independance. Now the statue is surrounded by children and adults fighting for survival in a damaged city.

Commerce has opened in front of the broken Palais Nationale. A woman is getting her hair done at a mobile beauty salon!

A UN tank was providing security in front of the palace. They had the gun pointed across the street at the refuge camp.

This was the camp that the soldiers were keeping an eye on.
