UN CHIEF RECOMMENDS FEWER TROOPS IN HAITI
(Jamaica Observer) -

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has recommended reducing the number of peacekeeping troops in Haiti.

The UN chief said in a report circulated today that the Security Council should consider reducing the mission's military strength by 1,600 personnel, and consider lowering its police strength by 1,150 officers.

The Security Council currently authorizes up to 8,940 military personnel and 4,391 police officers for the mission established in 2004 after armed conflict sent then-President Jean-Bertrand into exile. The council increased mission staffing to current levels after the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake.

Ban wrote that the country had made "considerable strides" since the quake, including a peaceful transition of power.
