TAIPEI - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Friday that a ground breaking ceremony for a new community to settle 1,000 Haitians affected by an earthquake last year was held Aug. 31 in Artibonite Province, north of the capital Port au Prince.

MOFA officials said Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly led officials at the ceremony, during which he expressed his appreciation to the Republic of China government and the Red Cross Society of the ROC for extending aid after the magnitude 7.0-earthquake of Jan. 21, 2010.

The construction project is being funded by the Red Cross Society of the ROC and the ministry, which have commissioned an overseas engineering company to carry out the construction.

To ensure the sustainable development of the new community, the ministry is also working with the non-profit International Cooperation and Development Fund to assist the people who will live in the community to grow corn, sorghum and pigeon peas for self-reliance.

Taiwan will also provide wages to the victims who help build the new community after they have been given training in brick-laying.
