NATIONS HEED DOMINICAN REPUBLIC'S CALL TO HELP HAITI REBUILD NOW
(Dominican Today) -

NEW YORK - The friend and donor countries of Haiti today pledged to replace words with actions and increase their efforts to expedite the reconstruction of the Caribbean nation, devastated by the January 2010 earthquake.

The initiative stemmed from a Minister level meeting for Haiti, in New York’s Continental hotel, headed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and her husband, ex-president Bill Clinton.

The Dominican Republic was represented by Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales, who had earlier demanded that donors go from aid on emergencies and conjunctures, to concrete facts, a proposal that was supported by the group of countries who are partners for Haiti’s reconstruction.

After the meeting, which journalists didn’t have access to, Morales said the activity went from announcements to concrete efforts, while reiterating the Dominican Republic’s commitment to its neighboring nation.

The diplomat added that to coordinate the bilateral agenda even more, President Leonel Fernandez will meet in New York City with Haitian President Michel Martelly, but he didn’t specify a date. "All the donor countries there, including the United States pledged to fulfill their financial commitments with Haiti."
