Mar. 13/14 - Dieubon - "Doobie"

Dieubon ("Doobie") came up to me yesterday and told me that he needed to stay here. He said that someone who was helping his mother out with money wasn't helping her anymore and that he now needed to stay here. Everyone who comes here to Coram Deo knows Dieubon. He is a cute kid who has quite the character:) He almost lives here as it is. He attends our school here during the week and during the rest of the week he hangs out in our yard and plays with the other children.

Last night when his mother came to pick him up I asked her why he needed to live here. She told me that a haitian man who helped lend her money from time to time for commerce was shot a few days ago. He was walking in the Wharf St. Joseph area of the city with another man when gunmen came up to them demanding that they give them their money. The man told his friend to hand over money to the thieves but the guy was stubborn. As a result the gunmen opened fire and Dieubons mother's helper was shot 2 times in the leg and the other man who refused to hand over his money was killed. The gunmen weren't good at aiming while they shot and ended up shooting a couple of people standing nearby as well. A young boy Dieubon's age was struck by a bullet as well. The gunmen got away and as a result 4 lives have been effected/changed. Dieubon was worried that his mother wouldn't be able to provide food for him. I told Dieubon and his mother that he can have all his meals here and that he won't go hungry. His mother's supporter is in the Medecins Sans Frontieres Hospital recovering from his wounds. Pray for security here in Haiti for those who walk the streets and for healing for those recovering from bullet wounds. Robberies are a common occurrence on the streets of Port-au-Prince.
