Jan. 1/15 - Fort Picolet - Cap Haitien

When we finished our boat ride out to Rat Island we did some walking/hiking around the Cap Haitien coast late Sunday afternoon. We decided to hike out to Ft. Picolet. Around the coast of Haiti are several crumbling forts that were constructed in the early 1800's in anticipation of a return of Napoleon's forces to retake the island of Hispaniola. We walked the boulevard which is close to the Atlantic coastline of Haiti. It was a fun walk. We didn't realize that we had to walk ...along the waters to reach the fort. The ocean was pretty agitated that day and the challenge was walking/running some sections of the coast to avoid incoming water from waves. Peter looked through garbage along the coast to find a couple of sandals to wear to avoid soaking his running shoes. The time was getting late and we didn't want to have to hike/walk back in the dark and we almost reached the fort. On our walk back we watched a group of fishermen cooking a large pot of fish. We all loved our stay in Cap Haitien.
