SENATOR DENOUNCES DEATH THREATS, CLAIMS PROOF OF FOREIGNERS IN GOV'T
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE – Senator Moïse Jean-Charles (Nord/Inite) insists that he has material evidence, including passport numbers that would prove members of government hold foreign nationalities. The senator also denounced death threats that he has received in recent days.

Senator Jean-Charles a member of a senate commission established in November to investigate the nationalities of members of the Haitian government revealed that the President of the Republic, Michel Joseph Martelly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Lamothe, the Minister of Tourism Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin and Secretary of State for the Interior, Georges Racine, hold citizenships in foreign countries.

Jean-Charles says he holds proof, including passport numbers, that show that these officials have citizenship in the United States, Bolivia and Canada.

”There are ministers that have Bolivian nationality, there are ministers that have Canadian nationality, there are ministers that have American nationality. The secretary of state, himself is an American.”

”The senate of the republic has to work on these cases with the Canadian embassy and that of the United States.”

Asked if these revelations would turn out to be false, Senator Jean-Charles did not hide his indignation..., saying:

”It is my job that I am doing, the work of the parliament that I am doing. I can’t take a case as serious as this, and just make noise with it.”

”There is a copy of passports, passport numbers, how many trips they have made, as it pertains to these people. We know everything about their travels.”

Senator Jean Charles says that he has not collaborated with any ambassadors in his findings. The senator says that a report will be prepared by the commission with recommendations and ask that the National Assembly accept it.

The senator expects that the Chamber of Deputies will indict the individuals in question. It is the opinion of most Haitians that these officials would have to be removed from their positions as required by the Haitian Constitution.

Threats on the Senator’s Life

The Senator of the North denounces intimidations and death threats that have been launched at him since news of his findings have gone public. The senator says he is not intimidated:

”We are not scared!”

”The tons of threats that I have been receiving since yesterday, people saying that if I talk about the issue they will kill me, .... they will make it that I can’t go out…”

”We have two telephone numbers of people who have threatened us. They can’t intimidate us. Until my life is done, we will fight until the end.”

Since the announcement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Tourism have denied holding other nationalities.
