GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE SECTOR AT THE FIRST RECONSTRUCTION FORUM
(Haiti Libre) -

Last Friday, Prime Minister, Dr.Garry Conille, spoke at the opening of the first Forum on the reconstruction of Haiti, which brought together to the Karibe Convention Center representatives of the international community, and members of the Haitian private sector. Several personalities attended the launch of the Forum, including the Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, Jude Hervé Day, the Representative of the international community in Haiti, Nigel Fischer and several officials of the Chamber of Commerce and industry and Ambassadors accredited in Haiti.

The Prime Minister announced that his government is giving priority to the reconstruction of the country and that a set of strategies were already implemented, aiming among other: land use, the construction of social housing and public buildings in a safe and healthy environment; reiterating that the year 2012 will be that of great opportunities, while stressing that to capture them, it is necessary that the private and public sectors work together with the support of the international community.

The Conille government intends to accelerate the implementation of a new growth strategy with the objective of a GDP growth in real terms of 7.8%."'Investments in public infrastructure, particularly in the framework of reconstruction, private investment, and exports fostered by the opportunities offered by the HELP law, will indeed contribute to the achievement of this objective," thinks the Prime Minister.

For Dr. Garry Conille, "the reconstruction will be an opportunity for economic recovery that is part of a sustainable development and concerted strategy." But to achieve these objectives, he believes that collaboration and the synergisation of all sectors around a shared vision is indispensable. "The objective is to enable the private sector to see the direction that the government is taking and to know how to position themselves;" stressing that, "the dialogue between the private and public sector has started well and could lead to a partnership."

In total, nearly a hundred projects should be implemented during 2012. Most have already found funding, informed the Prime Minister. "We are at a crucial juncture, we have great and beautiful opportunities to seize from this year, and the international community is with us, to accompany us," indicating that government authorities had the day before the forum, a positive meeting with major investors, who participated in the recent forum on investment in Haiti.

Hervé Denis, the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed the first Forum, which launched a true public-private dialogue. "We are positioning ourselves and we will be attentive to the government" he declared, optimistic.
