Ms. Cléopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director of International Labour Standards Department, International Labour Organization (ILO), with Ms. Tania Caron, Senior Specialist of International Labour Standards at the ILO, joined by Antonio Cruciani, Coordinator of the ILO for the reconstruction have completed this week a mission of six days.

Seeing how factors relating to labor law are governed by national legislation and the way the country is implementing its international obligations relating to treaties and conventions it has signed, that have been ratified and accepted; these were the objectives of the ILO mission to Haiti.

Having participated in discussions during this mission with the ILO,Pierre Michel Brunache, Minister of Justice, François Richel Lafaille, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Mr. Anel Joseph, President of the Court of Cassation, the President and the Clerk of the Labour Court, social partners including employers, represented by the Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH), trade unions and Justice and Human Rights Sections of the Minustah.

Among the issues discussed: labor law, freedom of association, collective bargaining, workplace discrimination, child labor, health, safety, and protection, and social security. Ms. Cléopatra Doumbia-Henry has described as "enormous", the challenges faced by Haiti to achieve the implementation of standards relating to labor law. Among these, that of building and operating the rule of law. Stressing that the government can not do everything, it is necessary that the employers and the unions bring their contributions, "Not only to the functioning of the rule of law, but also in job creation, and the search for solutions to various problems affecting the country."
