CLUB OF MADRID SUPPORTS THE MINIG AND TOURISM SECTORS
(Haiti Libre) -

A delegation from the Club de Madrid, led by former President Jorge Fernando Quiroga of Bolivia and former President Jose Maria Figueres of Costa Rica, and accompanied by the Deputy Secretary General Maria Elena Agüero, will conduct the seventh highlevel mission of the Global Leadership Project for Haiti's Reconstruction. This Project is an initiative of the Club de Madrid financed by the European Union that has assisted Haitian leaders over the past 20 months as they have dealt with political, economic and social challenges following the January 2010 earthquake. The Mission will be the final activity of the Global Leadership Project for the Reconstruction of Haiti, a Club de Madrid initiative that began in 2010 with financial support from the European Union.

With the intention of constructing a positive look forward and focusing on the potential for economic development in Haiti, the project's final mission includes the II Investment Conference on February 28, convened by the Presidential Advisory Council on Investment. As with the previous missions, the Club de Madrid aims to provide Haiti with the benefit of the experience of the Club's members, this time with the goal of promoting investment in mining and ecotourism.

Conscious of the political fragmentation that in these days endangers the stability and impedes the development of a legislative agenda, and the need to focus on improving the well-being of Haitians, the delegation will meet with the principal leaders of the country. The objective of these meetings will be to analyze the contributions of the current project in strengthening the institutions and economic development of Haiti, to express our appreciation for Haiti's implementation of the project, and to make available the support of the Club de Madrid.

The Club de Madrid remains committed to Haiti and the Haitians, and will continue to offer Haiti's political, social and economic leaders the Club's principle asset: the collective experience of its members.

The delegation will meet with Haitian leaders including President Martelly, PM Conille, and ministers of tourism, trade, and industry, as well as representatives of the international community, Presidents Figueres and Quiroga will make their political experiences with mining and tourism available to businesses and authorities in the region in order to promote domestic and foreign investment into Haiti.

About the Club de Madrid:
The Club de Madrid is an independent non-profit organization composed of 87 democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers from 60 different countries, constituting the world’s largest forum of former Heads of State and Government, who have come together to respond to a growing demand for support among leaders in two key areas: democratic leadership and governance; and response to crisis and post-crisis situations. Both lines of work share the common goal of addressing the challenge of democratic governance and political conflict as well as that of building functional and inclusive societies, where the leadership experience of our Members is most valuable.
