photos - cite soleil - part 4

To help protect from flooding rubble debris built up the land beside the canal. In rainy season this area would flood. It will be interesting to see how the changes made affects flooding in Ti-Ayiti.

This is the inside of the pharmacy. The hospital will be a trauma hospital. The only other hospital in Cite Soleil, Hopital St. Catherine used to be staffed by Medecins Sans Frontieres personnel. They have now left the hospital and handed control of the hospital back to the government. Patients have to pay for a dossier and for medications, etc. This new hospital constructed by Dr. Rick Frechette's organization NPH and Willy and Joel's organization will be targeting the poor. The hospital is still in the construction stage but as you can see from this photo it is almost ready to open.

They have also turned shacks into cement homes. 30 cement homes have been funded through Italian donations. These houses are beautiful. As a house is built the family living in a shack destroys the shack and moves in to their home. The community is really encouraged by this sight.

This is Willy and the soccer coach for their youth programs. Jeff brought a bunch of soccer equipment that will be used by the youth in Cite Soleil.

One of the residents of the new cement homes kindly invited us to see inside her home. Many of the poor don't have a toilet and in Ti-Ayiti people usually use the canal or the beach as their bathroom. For us a toilet is a given in a home, but for the poor, having a regular toilet is a luxury. The small room off to the side has a toilet and shower area.
