THE TOWN OF LES CAYES IN JUBILATION FOR THIS FIRST DAY
(Haiti Libre) -
President Michel Martelly, accompanied by the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, participated this Sunday, February 19, 2012, in Les Cayes, in the traditional parade of musical and allegorical floats of the first day, under the acclamation of participants who came from both Haiti and abroad, and who have repeatedly expressed to the Head of State, their gratitude for having been able, as part of his decentralization policy, recognizing the tourism and economic values of the South.
The Head of State, and all Cabinet members, have joined the event to offer the public, the best possible carnival, in a department with a high capacity and potential for tourism; who wishes to take, without delay, the train of sustainable development, as the Carnival says "Ayiti ap dekole, Okay pran devan". (Haiti is moving, Cayes takes the lead)
More than 10 neighboring communes (Aquin, St-Louis, Gelée, Torbeck, St Jean, Port-salut, Ile-à-vache, Camp-Perrin, Port-à-piment...), have allowed the accommodation of visitors, not only in over 45 hotels and nearly 200 private homes rented out for the occasion in Les Cayes, but also in developed sites for this purpose.
The parade route of about 4.2km, was traced in the streets more than 10 meters wide, where 13 music floats, 11 allegorical floats, more than 2,000 figurants, more than 13 dance schools, and twenty groups from different trends, walking bands, compas, racine, and rap, providing colorful shows, rich in musical diversity.
A site has been developed to accommodate more than 150 artisans, not to mention the opening of several craft galleries in the heart of the city, to encourage local artistic creation. This cultural event is also an opportunity for participants in the Carnival, local and foreign, to discover many tourist sites (caves, waterfalls, fortresses, beaches...) located mostly 30 to 45 minutes from the carnival site, through organized excursions at low cost.
An entire system is established to promote the full success of the event. More than twenty media partners (radio, TV, web TV, social networks...) 8 points of emergency services, not to mention the mobile services of the Red Cross and the permanence of the Immaculate Conception Hospital, are ready to intervene if necessary.
The Head of State congratulated the remarkable synergy of the civil society, and of the local authorities, and urged them to maintain that attitude in all decisions that may lead to the improvement of living conditions for the population of the South.
