GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS ON NATIONALITIES
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE – The Ministry of the Prime Minister for Relations with Parliament received and declared it is within the right of senators to make declarations on the nationality of members of government but the government would continue moving forward with its work.

On Wednesday, Senator Moïse Jean-Charles (Nord/Inite), a member of a senate commission established on November 22nd to review the nationality of members of the government, said that he had found that the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Lamothe, Minister of Tourism, Stephanie Villedrouin and the Secretary of State, Georges Racine all as being citizens of countries other than Haiti.

If the senator's claims are true, the Constitution of Haiti would not have allowed those members of government to be eligible for the posts they now hold.

The Minister to the Prime Minister for Relations with Parliament, Ricardo Theano, responded to the assertions:

”The senator, Jean-Charles, has the right to make his declaration… “

”We ourselves,... we’ve heard the declarations and all we are going to do at the level of the government is to work and continue to bring relief to the people, and continue to work for them.”

Reporter Vilner Joseph asked, with the new year just beginning and the hopes of the people in their government, that has the President, three (3) ministers and a secretary of state having citizenship in another country,... would that affect the work of the executive? Minister Theano responded:

”This is what we say: .... Senator Jean Charles has made his declaration. This is his prerogative… but for us, we are continuing to work, we are occupied with the affairs of the state, we are advancing to give the population a better tomorrow.”
