USA: CONCRETE SUPPORT TO THE PNH AND THE HAITIAN JUDICIAL SYSTEM
(Haiti Libre) -
Last Friday, the Haitian National Police (PNH), held an inauguration of the new police substation at Portail Léogâne. This ceremony took place in the presence of, among others, Kenneth Merten, U.S. Ambassador to Haiti and about twenty young people from Martissant, who were trained in construction trades, and who had participated for several weeks in the rehabilitation and expansion works of the former substation, completely remodeled in a modern manner. This project was conducted by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of its aid to rebuild the country, in collaboration with the Haitian Government.
Ambassador Kenneth Merten said that this partnership included other construction projects, taking advantage of the occasion to announce: the construction of a police station at Wharf Cité Soleil and at Route des dalles, the expansion of the national penitentiary and the construction of a prison for women; as well as the renovation of several other institutions across the country.
The Ambassador reiterated the commitment of the United States, to bring its contribution to the Police Nationale d'Haiti (PNH), and the judiciary. "We know that security is essential for stability and that it is necessary to regain, if you want to reach prosperity and development of this country"
The inhabitants of Portail Léogâne, are convinced that the new substation will help to reduce the acts of banditry and intimidation that they face daily. However, they point out that the security should not be limited to the construction of beautiful buildings. "The important thing is not the construction of the building, but to provide the police officers with the means to do their job" said a resident.
