ARTICLE - DESDUNES - POLICE STATION BURNT

SURGE OF VIOLENCE IN DESDUNES

Yesterday, Monday, in the commune of Desdunes, Lesly Leroy, an agent III [6th promotion], opened fire on a man who resisted arrest, stated Frantz Lerebours, Commissioner and spokesperson of the National Police of Haiti (PNH).

The victim, Jean Robert Racine, aged 34, was rushed to the hospital of Saint Nicolas (Saint-Marc); then transferred to General Hospital of Port-au-Prince to receive appropriate care. Frantz Lerebours has denied rumors that suggested that the wounded man had died.

Following this arrest that went wrong, the people in anger, burned the police station. Unidentified people, burned all the archives and brought out the prisoners who were in custody; before going to the house of the mother of the police officer and burnt her house also.

In this riot situation, agents of the Departmental Unit for the Maintenance of Order (UDMO) had to be deployed to stop the outbreak of violence. Frantz Lerebours, announced the strengthening of the police presence but the tension remains high in the town. Police officials have launched an appeal for calm to the population.

Fearing for his life, the agent, Lesly Leroy was placed in a safe place, Commissioner Lerebours indicated.
