ARTICLE - IRENE - SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY

IRENE- UPDATE ON THE SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY

This present report of the situation in Haiti covers the period from Monday, August 22, 2011 9:00pm, to Tuesday, August 23, 2011 9:00am; a few hours before the passage of Irene. Nevertheless, the whole northern part of Haiti already felt since Monday, the first impacts of Irene [Classified Category 2]

Summary:

- In the Northeast, a landslide and localized rains are reported, and also in the Northern Department (Limbé, Cap-Haitien, Plaisance and Pilate).

- Trois-Rivières in the Northwest is in flood, while intermittent rains are reported in several communes of the department;

- All structures of the Risk Management System are mobilized. Many temporary shelters are open.

North Department:

Weather situation : Heavy rains in the towns of Cap-Haitien, Grande Rivière du Nord, Ranquitte, La Victoire;

Damage recorded : fields are devastated in Plaisance

Northwest Department:

Weather situation : Heavy rains across the department. Rising tide at Saint Louis du Nord. Flooding of Trois Rivières, Bassin Bleu, Port de Paix and Chansolme. Flooding of the Rivières des Barres in Saint Louis du Nord;

Northeast Department:

Weather situation: Heavy showers are recorded.

Damage recorded: Landslides were reported in Mont-Organisé and Vallière, where roads are cut off.

Centre Department:

Weather situation : The weather is partly cloudy across all municipalities. Rain in Hinche;

Artibonite Department:

Weather situation : Sky is partially covered. Intermittent rainfall recorded in Marmalade

Grand 'Anse Department:

Weather situation : Moderate rains in Jérémie, Beaumont; the sea is rough, especially on the Cayemites islands. Light winds throughout the department.
