ARTICLE - PROTESTS IN GAILLARD

DEMONSTRATIONS IN GAILLARD, AROUND THE NEW ROAD
(Haiti Libre) -

The work of the new road that will link Gaillard, [communal section of Ouanaminthe, located on the Domincan border - North-East] and the free zone. The free zone was disrupted due to demonstrations that continued for several days. Last Tuesday, residents had once again erected barricades and burned tires, and throwing stones at the Minustah peacekeepers present on site to disperse the demonstrators.

The protesters demanded among other things: the compensation of approximately 50 families who lost their homes, for this important work. They also require that the work for a water supply is completed in Gaillard. (note for the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) that Gaillard is the neighborhood where we recorded the highest number of cholera cases). Finally they claim an electrical connection on the the grid of the Electricity of Haiti (EDH) in order to use this service of which they have been deprived.

According to some testimonials, the demonstrators want to find a a resolution to the situation and put an end to their movement as soon as possible; demonstrations that affect businesses in the zone. They urge the Government to respond positively to their requests and demand the departure of the military forces of the Minustah from their community, which only exacerbates a situation already tense enough.
