Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen has today granted the sum of 800,000 euros in humanitarian aid owing to the cholera epidemic in Haiti. Half of the sum will be channelled through WHO and half through Finnchurch Aid.

The funds channelled through WHO will be used for efforts to combat and prevent cholera at the national level in Haiti. Finnchurch Aid, in turn, will use the sum to support the work done by Finnchurch Aid staff locally. Among other tasks, aid workers supply interim shelters, clean water and medical supplies.

The cholera epidemic arose subsequent to hurricane Tomas, which had an impact on the more than one million Haitians living in temporary shelters following the disastrous earthquake.

Earlier, in spring, Finland granted 5.4 million euros in humanitarian aid to support the earthquake victims. The funds were channelled through UN relief agencies, the Red Cross and Finnchurch Aid.
