SOCIAL ASSISTANCE FUND DOUBLES BENEFIRS FOR RECIPIENTS
(Defend Haiti) -
PORT-AU-PRINCE – The Social Assistance Fund (CAS) has doubled the allocation granted to welfare recipients according to the announcement made by its director, Herold Israel.
Starting Wednesday, benefit recipients began receiving 1,000 HTG ($24.09 [US]), up from 500 HTG.
The CAS Director also indicated that many innovations are being made under his direction of the department devolved from the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The fund expects to employ more social workers throughout the nine departments. By appointing other employees and intervening in the remotest corners of the country, according to Israel interviewed by Le Matin, the institution can identify and provide services to those in need outside the capital in remote regions.
In the objectives to lay the groundwork for the CAS in provincial towns some direct interventions have been made in the localities of Dérac (Fort-Liberté), La Gonave and Plaine de l’arbe.
With some partners, a new village was built in Dérac, working with the elected officials of the Nord-Est Department and with the help of some international partners. This town where they used to grow sisal in the past, is now a vast desert with almost nothing.
By these actions, the Social Assistance Fund wants to expand its activities outside of Port-au-Prince and help as many people as possible.
Currently, with 6,000 people receiving assistance, the fund intends to increase to over 15,000 in the coming year. Mr. Israel hoped that the program "Aba Grangou" will eliminate the need for welfare in Haiti.
