HAITI - ELECTIONS: A HAITIAN CITIZEN VICTIM OF A PEACEKEEPER?

The Ministry of Defense of Argentina has confirmed today, that a peacekeeper of its contingent in Haiti was involved in the death of a Haitian citizen. The event occurred during an armed confrontation at the time of the elections, last Sunday...According to a military source, the incident occurred while the peacekeepers, as part of their mission, stood guard in front of a polling station in the Artibonite region. A band of men armed with guns attacked the polling station. Despite the summations of peacekeepers, the individuals would not renounce from an armed confrontation. The Haitian citizen was wounded by a bullet during a confused shootout. The victim received emergency first care by the Argentinian soldiers, but died during transport to the hospital in Saint Marc.

According to an official source, the Minustah has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and the origin of the fatal shooting. Argentina is participating in the Minustah since its creation by the UN in 2004 and the Argentinean contingent currently has 714 soldiers deployed to Haiti.
