OTTAWA - Efforts to rebuild École Lakay, a Port-au-Prince trade school devastated in the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, can now get underway thanks to successful fundraising efforts by the Canadian Construction Association and its partners.

The more than $600,000 raised will be used to rebuild the workshops at the school and replace damaged or stolen machinery and equipment.

On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti. Centered less than 25 kilometers from its capital, Port-au-Prince, it left as many as 250,000 people dead and more than 300,000 injured. The earthquake damaged more than 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings.

CCA's newly appointed Chair Dee Miller expressed her appreciation for the donations that came in from all over Canada. Most significantly, a recent fundraising event at the CCA Annual Conference saw over $300,000 committed to the project.

"Our members' generosity is heartwarming" she said. "I know many of them have held fundraisers and donated to this very worthy cause."

CCA will be working very closely with Builders without Borders (an organization that was introduced to CCA by the British Columbia Construction Association), The Rinaldi Foundation in Haiti and representatives from the Association de la construction du Québec, to begin the rebuilding process. "This school will not only help Haitian students learn construction trades," said Immediate Past Chair Wayne Morsky, "but it will also turn out the very people needed to help rebuild the country."
