photos - elections - part 11

The UN was out in force downtown. This tank was outside of the ruins of the Palais Nationale.

On each side street around the palace area was a tank or two.

UN policemen were on hand keeping an eye out. There was not much traffic at all. Motorcycles were banned on election day and everyone else was being cautious and avoiding driving because of worries of election day violence.

The Champ de Mars is a large public park in front of the palace. Since January 12th it has been a large tent/tarp refuge camp. This Brazilian UN patrol is heading down the road on the Champ de Mars.

While Jean Bertrand Aristide was president he started construction on a large tower that at the top would have a lighted freedom flame. There are around 200 steps in this statue symbolizing the years of freedom of Haiti. It never got finished as he was removed from power in 2004. Haitian policemen were using the upper levels of the tower/building as an observation point.
