SENATE QUESTIONS DESTRUCTION OF IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS DURING INVESTIGATION
(Defend Haiti) -

PORT-AU-PRINCE – The Minister of the Interior and the Director of Immigration and Emigration will soon be invited to the senate to explain the destruction of a set of documents at the offices of immigration, while a senate investigation on foreign nationals in government is underway.

On Thursday, Senator Nenel Cassy (Nippes/Inite) said he did not understand why the director of immigration would make such an authorization and for it to happen at this point and time. The senator could not find the words to explain, saying that this action gives rise to various interpretations.

The parliamentarian questioned whether a justice official was present at the time these documents were destroyed, or if they were transcribed in electronic form before their destruction. Cassy informed the public that soon the immigration director and the minister of the interior would be invited to Parliament, to give further explanation. “We are concerned and we demand an explanation,” he said to the Agence Haitienne de Presse.

Cassy also noted that the work of the senate commission of inquiry, to which he belongs, is in a lull due to other engagements with the organization of the carnival festivities in several regions of country.

Investigating senators are less available Cassy said; adding further that the conditions are not yet ready for the travel of members of the commissions abroad, in order to shed light on the alleged foreign citizenship of government members, and the head of state himself.

Senator Cassy considers it important that diplomatic contacts are established before the trip to ensure good cooperation from the countries concerned.
