HAITI - JUSTICE: SECURING EVIDENCE
(HaitiLibre) -

As part of the official launch of the national project of securing evidence, supported by UNDP, the Court of First Instance (TPI) of Port-au-Prince just received a safe, resistant to fire, flooding and theft. The many burglaries of the registries (greffes) at the courts of First Instance, demonstrates the necessity to securing the evidence.

This project aims to equip the jurisdictions of the country, of reliable working tools that will enable a better conservation and securing of evidence. These tools include a safe, registers, and monitoring sheets to ensure a better traceability of evidence.

"The conservation and securing of evidence remains one of the recurring problems of the criminal justice system in Haiti. It is necessary to note, that previously, many weapons, money, drugs and sensitive evidence have been regularly lost... ; which, among other things, explains the need to implement effective control mechanisms for the management of evidence, essential in the treatment of any criminal case", explained Paolo Del Mistro, Manager of the Rule of Law/Justice Project.

Under this program, 19 other TPI and Prosecutors' offices will receive the same tools by the end of the year. Alongside this activity, a guide of registry will be developed and distributed. This practical guide, which explains the use of safes and records will describe the different steps to follow in the framework of the traceability of evidences, for a more transparent management of the latter.

All these initiatives are part of a framework of global Intervention of the Rule of Law Project of UNPD on the registries; whose objective is to improve public services of the criminal justice system.
