200 QUICK IMPACT PROJECTS, CURRENTLY UNDERWAY

As part of its institutional support to the Haitian Government, the Civil Affairs Section of the Minustah continues to make Quick Impact Projects to help meet the immediate needs of the population in terms of infrastructure, while supporting the process of reconstruction of the country.

Given the importance and usefulness of these projects, the proposed budget for their implementation has increased from $3 million for the year 2009-2010 to $7.5 million for 2010-2011. This substantial increase was accompanied by a special permission to increase the maximum per project of 25,000 to 100,000 U.S. dollars.

As of June 15, 2011, nearly 200 projects are underway in the country. Over the past two weeks, the following Quick Impact Projects have been launched :

In Mirebalais, to the communal section of Gascogne, three projects have been launched on June 9, including the construction of 300 meters of irrigation canal in masonry, the rehabilitation of 400 meters of dirt canal and the construction of two fish ponds of two hundred square meters each. These projects are funded to the tune of 2 million gourdes [± 40 gourdes = 1 U.S. dollar].

In Cavaillon, in the Southern Department, the Quick Impact Projects, which were launched from May 31 relate to the construction and the equipment of the Peace Court, a building which will house also the Registry office of Cavaillon. This project will benefit first, the people of the region [approximately 90.000 inhabitants] and will strengthen the operational capacities of these institutions to improve access to justice for litigants, and in general, to consolidate the rule of law in this jurisdiction. This project is conducted in partnership with the Diocesan Caritas South, and its cost amounted to 3,145,621 gourds.

Moreover, in Hinche, the Minustah has launched on June 1st the rehabilitation of the courtyard of the hospital Ste Thérèse, in partnership with the Directorate of the hospital. The project consists of the construction of a perimeter of concrete with the development of green space, which will clean the yard of the hospital and significantly reduce the possibility of infections. The cost of this project is 1,356,148 gourds. The hospital Ste Thérèse is the Departmental public hospital of f the Ministry of Health in the Central Plateau. With a capacity of 185 beds, the hospital receives about 400 people daily.
