ARTICLE - OLD JACMEL PRISON - TOURISM

THE OLD JACMEL PRISON WILL BECOME A CULTURAL CENTRE
(Haiti Libre) -

Mario Dupuy, the new Haitian Minister of Culture has officially launched Tuesday the restoration project of the former prison of Jacmel to transform it into a Tourism and Cultural Centre. This project is part of a partnership between the Ministry of Culture, and the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN); with financial support from the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI)... The ceremony took place in Jacmel, in the presence of the Spanish Ambassador to Haiti, the new Minister of Culture, and various other personalities.

"How not to be caught up by the strong symbolism of this work, because we will transform a former prison, a place of confinement, into a cultural center; therefore a place of freedom by excellence [...]

As you know, the reconstruction of Haiti, both physical and human, remains the main priority of His Excellency Mr. Joseph Michel Martelly, President of the Republic [...] It is given to us to note the tangible and indisputably positive results that are made here in Jacmel [...] We stress that the culture in Haiti is both our first, and last line of defense.

In some time, maybe some will forget that this place, a former civilian prison, was a den of gloom, a black hole... but the light of art, with such ease will settle there [...]; on behalf of the Government, and on behalf of the President of the Republic. My dear friends of the Spanish Cooperation, a big thanks."
