CANADA SUPPORTS SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM IN HAITI
(Toronto Sun) - By QMI

More than one million primary school students in Haiti received a hot meal every day of their 2012 school year thanks to Canada. And they can count on that happening again.

On Friday, the innovative food program that feeds the children received a $15 million boost from the federal government.

Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, said Canada would continue to support the United Nations World Food Programme's (WFP) School Feeding Program in the Caribbean nation.

With the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the program helps reduce nutritional deficits among schoolchildren, improve learning outcomes, and increase attendance in primary schools. It also promotes local agriculture by purchasing up to 25% of its rice requirements from local Haitian producers.

"Canada is proud to support the School Feeding Program in Haiti to help prevent hunger and chronic malnutrition," Oda said in a statement. "We know the WFP's school feeding approach has a direct impact on learning capacities and academic performance, which makes this initiative all the more valuable."
