ARTICLE - NEW BREADFRUIT TREE FOR HAITI

WINNETKA GROUP INTRODUCES TREE TO HAITI

Trees That Feed Foundation of Winnetka, has introduced a new variety of breadfruit tree to Haiti. Chair Mary McLaughlin of Winnetka arrived in Port-au-Prince Haiti with 504 breadfruit tree saplings, of the Ma’afala variety. This variety is very popular in the Pacific area, and is new to Haiti.

Representatives of 21 Haitian organizations attended an introductory workshop at the Hotel Montana, Petionville, on Jan. 18. The objectives of the workshop were to educate local communities about the breadfruit, demonstrate care of the trees, distribute plants, and build a network of interested organizations to sustain and extend the project.

McLaughlin chaired the workshop. She shared the mission of Trees That Feed Foundation, a public charity whose mission is to feed people and benefit the environment. A question and answer period followed...
