NEW CENTER FOR IN VITRO FERTILISATION IN PORT-AU-PRINCE
(Defend Haiti) - By Valéry Daudier

PORT-AU-PRINCE - According to Dr. Harry Beauvais, specialist in infertility and founder of the Haitian Centre for Investigation and Treatment of Advanced Infertility (CHITAI) there are approximately 2 million 950 thousand women in childbearing years in Haiti.

But, he reveals, 12% of these women cannot bear children, not to mention "men problems." The number of women or couples, said the doctor, who would have problems with infertility in Haiti varies between 280 and 330 thousand.

The Haitian statistics, reveals the doctor, that when a couple is unable to bear children in 40% of cases, it is the woman who has problems; in 30% of cases, it is the man; in 20% of cases, both of them, and in 10% of cases, the cause remains undetermined. It is understandable why many enter daily through the CHITAI. Lack of space to accommodate the volume of patients, and officials have chosen to work in the shadows. As of June 25, they will be ready with newly developed spaces.

"We receive on average about 20 patients per day seeking this service, not to mention multiple telephone calls", says Dr. Harry J. Beauvais. "It is not only to provide services for the treatment of infertility in the country." "Gynaecologists provide services in their clinic there....but there are women who never have children without in vitro fertilisation ", said Dr., proudly announcing the official launch of this service for June 25, 2011.

Listening to the infertility specialist, he aims to be among the best from the point of view of investigations for men who have problems to father children. From the point of view of quality, he said, they will arrange to give comparable results to those of the most advanced centers of the United States; the fact that they will use the same technology and the same experts.

"The results that we hope to obtain in this center will be the pride of Haitian medicine." "If someone seeks a treatment of infertility in Haiti, and does not find this service with us, it is that this service does not yet exist," argues the doctor. We will have in this center "everything that exists in the world for the treatment of infertility.

Such a service, said the doctor, will allow thousands of Haitian couples, who have lost the hope of finally having access to the advanced care that they can seek on a daily basis in other countries, especially in Dominican Republic. "This is bringing hope to all these people, including women who are frustrated and unable to procreate", said the doctor.

"As founder and leader of this group, I can say that, for once, the Haitian medical profession can be proud that we are going to start a high level Institute in this country." It will be more advanced in this area than other countries in the Caribbean, in particular our nearest neighbor. "All of the latest, most advanced facilities are already available here and already in place, and we follow medical techniques which are currently the most advanced in the world in this field", continued Dr. Harry Beauvais.

This center, he said, will work in close collaboration with experts from "Duke Fertility Center" of the United States, who will bring their expertise in the field. "This collaboration will allow us to have the technical support of one of the largest institutes in the world for the treatment of infertility," says the doctor.

On the other hand, reveals Dr. Harry J. Beauvais, that in investigations, men are much more of a problem. They often refuse to make the spermogramme...

With respect to the costs of such services, "I make a formal promise to the people of Haiti: that we will arrange for the costs of the in vitro fertilization services that are the most accessible as possible.". "It's much cheaper here than the least expensive place in the Dominican Republic and the United States," said the leader of this team of doctors.
