ARTICLE - VIOLENCE IN LES CAYES

LES CAYES IN THE HEART OF VIOLENCE
(HaitiLibre.com)

It's in Les Cayes (South Department) on Wednesday that violence was the worst. Our revised figures, are now 3 deaths and a dozen wounded by gunfire for this city alone.

Former Senator Gabriel Fortune confirmed that a demonstrator was shot dead by Senegalese peacekeepers during the attack on the Departmental Electoral Office (BED) which had been burned.

Two other young demonstrators were killed at the entrance of the city during the attack and pillage of a police station. The officers weapons were taken by the demonstrators.

The authorities believe that most public offices located in the downtown were burned or seriously damaged, including: offices of customs, finance, Directorate General of Taxation (DGI) and a branch of the National Bank of Credit. Private residences, shops, a radio station (owned by the outgoing senator Carlos Lebon (INITE)), and a school were also looted or damaged.
