RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil's Health Ministry announced on Thursday the release of 1 million U.S. dollars to help Haiti fight the cholera epidemic.
The money, which is to be released through the Pan American Health Organization, will be used to purchase and maintain equipment at a cholera treatment center in Carrefour, near Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince.
The center is cosponsored by Brazil and Cuba. Brazil will provide the necessary resources and some health professionals, and Cuba will send physicians and nurses.
According to Carlos Felipe D'Oliveira, coordinator of the managing committee for the center, the center will begin operating three days after the equipments were set up.
Brazil will also help Haiti with 12.2 million vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and rabies.
Over 1,800 people have already died from cholera in Haiti this year, and there are nearly 80,000 confirmed cases of the disease. Controlling the epidemic has been a challenge for local health professionals due to poor conditions that continue in many regions, following the major earthquake that hit Haiti in January.
