HAITI TO CONTINUE PAYING COMPENSATION TO REBEL EX-SOLDIERS
(Prensa Latina)-

Port au Prince - The Haitian government plans to continue paying compensation requested by a group of former soldiers mutinied since early this year, an official source announced on Wednesday.

Col. Jean-Claude Jeudy, in charge of dealing with the case in court, informed that in spite of violent incidents registered last month with the former soldiers, the Interior Ministry will pay this month's amount.

Members of the former National Armed Forces (FADH) took several military areas on the outskirts of the capital in January and refused to leave, ignoring President Michel Martelly's orders.

In mid-May, thousands of them marched through the capital and Cap Haitien (north) demanding the restoration of the Army, in a demonstration resulting in at least two wounded, some 50 detainees and widespread chaos in main cities.

After the incident, UN and local police forces made them leave the barracks.

They first demanded $15 million USD in compensation for damages after the demise of the Army 18 years ago.

However, when the government agreed to pay, they rejected the move and said they would only be satisfied when the Army is restored.
