SENATOR MOISE REQUESTS 3 DAYS FOR MARETLLY TO COMPLY WITH INVESTIGATION
(Defend Haiti) -
CAP-HAITIEN – Senator Jean-Charles Moise (Nord/Inite) on Friday made a request that President Michel Martelly be given three (3) days to present his travel documents, or face losing recognition as President of the Republic of Haiti.
The President of the Senate, Simon Desras (Centre/Lavni), at the request of a special senate commission investigating the nationality of members of government, sent a request in early January to the Head of State to present his travel documents for verification by the commission.
President Martelly has not cooperated with lawmakers in regard to this investigation, which prompted Senator Moise to say that the members of the upper house give the president three (3) days to comply, or not be recognized as the president of the republic by the grand body.
The Constitution of Haiti does not allow for the President of the Republic to hold foreign passports. Senator Moise at the beginning of the year claimed that he had found proof that President Martelly held citizenship and passports in two foreign countries, the United States of America and Italy.
In December, President Martelly dissolved the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), which passed him as a candidate for the presidency, for corruption and electoral fraud.
