US HOMELAND SECURITY HELPS LOCAL, HAITI AUTHORITIES COMBAT CRIMES

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. – Dominican Tourism Police and other officials from international organizations participated in a conference/workshop last week hosted by the US Homeland Security Department (HSI), aimed at improving the investigative capacities to confront trafficking with people and sexual tourism with minors in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The conference "Dealing with People, Forced Labor of Minors and Child Sexual Tourism" was held from February 7 to 10 in the Paradisus Hotel, with experts from nongovernment agencies as well as representatives of the governments of Haiti, United States and Dominican Republic.
The event also served to draft joint plans in the fight against those crimes that affect mostly women, children and adolescents.
The police officials from the Caribbean countries improved their knowledge on the investigation and identification of people traffickers, forced labor and child sexual tourism, the prosecution of the perpetrators and the assistance to victims.
The US HIS, that includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Office of the Attaché in Santo Domingo invited the Dominican Police and Haitian authorities to the conference, to bolster their training and improve their coordination and coordination in dealing with those crimes.
