ARTICLE - COMMUNAL FISHING CENTER

INAUGURATION OF A COMMUNAL FISHING CENTER IN THE SOUTHEAST

The agronomist, Hébert Docteur, the Minister of Agriculture, and the Spanish Ambassador in Haiti, Manuel Hernandez Ruigómez have proceeded with the inauguration of the Centre Communal Fishing and Marine Cayes-Jacmel (CCPM). The Minister was accompanied for the occasion by Dr. Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for Animal Production and various personalities.

Funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI) for nearly 2.5 million U.S. dollars, this project, initiated in 2007 was deployed in six phases. The Centre Communal fishing and marine Cayes-Jacmel (CCPM) has modern facilities and infrastructure that facilitates the storage, preservation and processing of fish.

Executed by the Ministry of Agriculture with the technical assistance from AECI, this Centre has been designed with the aim of improving the lives of nearly 5,000 fishermen and fishwives of the Southeast, particularly in the municipality of Cayes Jacmel, but also in the coastal municipalities of: Côte de fer, Bainet, Marigot, Jacmel, Belle-Anse, Grand Gosier et Anse à Pitre.

The intervention areas of the project are the following: organizational capacity building, development of marine resources, increase fish production through distribution and sale of fishing equipment, storage and commercialization of fish (in the fishing center. The latter is only one component of the project.)

The Minister of Agriculture emphasized the important role of the fishing center, which will permit to ... strengthen, enhance and revitalize the fishing industry in the Southeast. The Minister Hébert Docteur also promised to support fishermen's associations to facilitate the development of the fisheries sector in the region.
