TIRES BURNED PROTESTING NEGLECT BY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
(Defend Haiti) -
PORT-AU-PRINCE – Tires burned in the streets of Port-au-Prince's Bel-Air district on Thursday morning, a manifestation of impatience against the Departmental Delegate of the Ouest and the presidency.
In a broadcast by Radio Kiskeya, the young men of Bel-Air spoke, saying that they have not seen any of the social programs that the government has announced. They say the president’s delegate for their department cares more about his affairs of being a “makout” rather than addressing the needs of the population.
The manifestations in the neighborhood, one man said, was because young men cannot find work. They are hungry. They say that capable youth are not being given any opportunity by the government. Instead, they say, opportunity is given to a select few who are close to the Head of State and the Deparmental Delegate.
Another resident of Bel-Air said the burning tires are a sign of insecurity rising. He says it is not particular to the government of Martelly-Conille but a matter that exists in every government that comes to power in Haiti. “They don’t ever come down and join the people…”
The Minister of the Interior visited the district of Bel-Air days ago to listen to the community and try to direct services to those in need, but one resident in the audio file before said that he only met with his people that are not in the area where the young men are.
