ARTICLE - PM AND UNOPS MEETING

MEETING BETWEEN THE PRIME MINISTER AND UNOPS

Thursday, January 19, 2012, the Prime Minister, Dr. Garry Conille, met with Ms. Maria-Noel Vaeza, Regional Director of the "United Nations Office for Project Services" (UNOPS) for Latin America and the Caribbean.

This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing projects and programs, as well as strategic axes for future cooperation within the framework of the reconstruction of Haiti. The Director of UNOPS thanked the Prime Minister Garry Conille for the onfidence in UNOPS, especially for the new demand of universities construction, and the support to the health sector. She also gave an update on the support of UNOPS to the reconstruction, including the 16/6 project, management projects of debris and the demolition of buildings classified as red, and explained the new modalities of UNOPS to support the management capacity and the implementation for the Government of Haiti.

Prime Minister Garry Conille mentioned the "necessity of expedited procedures for rapid and visible results," particularly with regard to the Faculty and the University at Damien.

This meeting allowed the representative of UNOPS to give an update to the Prime Minister of its discussions with the Minister of Health, Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, and with the Director of the Construction Unit, Mr Harry Adam.

UNOPS has been working in Haiti since 2005, and currently employs over 450 people. At least 90% have been recruited locally. Since January 2010, the organization has grown tremendously because of the number of projects implemented, and a significant diversification of its areas of intervention. UNOPS participated in the evaluation of structural damage suffered by buildings, took part in the preparation and management of IDP camps, and cleaned the main channels of the capital. In addition, UNOPS is currently implementing a management project of debris and demolition.
